We Are All Successful

Never had I once paid attention to what INVISIBLE NARRATIVE meant, but now I realize that most things I am exposed to have an invisible narrative. It was at the beginning of the semester when I was finally introduced to a few different invisible narratives and I was able to point out that most of them are things we as humans either face or see in the world today. In the Media today invisible narrative are shown constantly, however we aren’t aware or pay attention to the invisible narratives unless they are insulting to us or until we are told to pay close attention to catch the true meaning. Media creates invisible narratives that are usually stereotypes that are often seen as a joke and we use them in our daily lives because they seem normal, but we don’t ultimately see the true meaning behind them. We are not conscious about what we say or do because it becomes part of the norm, but ultimately they are things being said or exposed that are hurtful to others. We do not see that the hidden messages behind the invisible narratives that can be true and often discouraging towards a race, gender or class. I truly believe that most things we see in society have a hidden message.  I know for a fact after understanding the definition of invisible narratives I acknowledge everything I see twice to understand the true meaning of what’s in front of my eyes.

Reflecting on my first piece of writing in the beginning of the semester, I wrote about my beliefs on how one is able to achieve success. I decided to write about success because when I was in the 8th grade I was always told that if I wanted to be as successful I had to follow the steps of those individuals who are white. Why, because they are often the ones who are successful. At one point, I remember a white substitute was staring at every the majority of Latin and view African American students in the class and said Mexicans and Africans Americans have it a lot harder then the white man in this world. This made me feel discourage and hopeless, he said, “Look at the number of presidents we have had any of them Mexican?” I asked myself why are we looked down upon? I asked myself are we less capable of being successful? Is he right? Once internalizing his words I began to tell my self that I do not need to follow the example of the white man to be successful. I do not need to praise a MAN in his success. To me it is a constant battle,  I believed in my capability as a Latin female. I knew that my beliefs on success were going to happen because there isn’t just on path to success and I decided to create my success I understood as both a female and coming from a Latin
background I would be seen as weak, but since that day I told myself that I would be successful. I was not going to follow the typical stay home mom.  I knew that my decision-making would be essential to my success. We make decisions that affect us in achieving success, but that doesn’t mean we stop and give up, but it clearly means we pick ourselves up and grow. We need to think and be aware of how certain factors play a role in our lives and how it can affect our decision-making.  We create the path to our success and we are held responsible to push ourselves in the right direction. It is the decisions we make that determine how our end result is. We shouldn’t let other determine our success, but prove not to them but to ourselves that we to are successful human beings and are fighting for a successful future. For those who feel discouraged because they do not follow the “ideal” path, (whatever that path is) shouldn’t feel less successful, because ever human being is different! We are all creative and intelligent in our own way. We make the call and determine how we want success to look like for ourselves.

Fatal Death Over Some Sneakers

A 14-year-old boy was found dead by his father in his Atlanta apartment mid October of 2014. The victim, Paul Sampleton, was a high school freshman who was shot dead during an armed robbery. It all took place over the sale of sneakers, specifically the Air Jordan XI. Typically how the “sneaker game” goes is sneakerheads (the term sneakerhead refers to an individual who is a sneaker fanatic) purchase limited, exclusive, or open to the general public sneakers. Then its up to the individual to keep the shoes as a collectable item or sale them twices as much as retail for profit. The pokemon slogan, gotta catch’em all, applies to sneakerheads as well.
As for the AIr Jordan XI, there what you call iconic sneakers from an iconic basketball player, Michael Jordan who is known nation and if not worldwide. When Nike set the date for the XI Concords to release it resulted into complete chaos. Retail shoe stores across the nation experienced massive dilemmas. From dealing with a needy massive crowd to personally dealing with the customers who didn’t get a hold of some sneakers. But for Sampleton was different. He played the role as a middleman, a third party sneaker retail seeking higher profits for his shoes. The investigation demonstrated that Paul posted on a Facebook page to find possible buyers. After a plethora of offers, Paul finally found a consumer. Unfortunately Paul was the one ending up paying, but with his life. The robbers somewhat strategically planned this robbery. Paul and the buyer set up a meetup date and place. The robber and his group planned to fake a robbery, with bare arms. One of them played the role as a criminal while the other one, attempting to buy the shoes, acts like he's in shock while being robbed. While the incident took place, everything was going according to plan until Paul refused to sell the shoe. Long story short, the criminals were fed up with Paul's time consuming excuses on why he won't sell the shoes that they just thought killing him would be a easier and faster way to obtain the sneakers. To this day the criminals are  unidentified and haven't been trailed. As for the family of Paul, there are grieving and wanting justice to be served. Local police stations sort of intervened in this situation and offered the police station to be a new meetup ground for sneakerheads during the exchange.
But we're not looking at the situation at a societal level. The media has promoted these iconic shoes Air Jordans to be a necessity for every individual in America. While some have fell into the trap of purchasing these sneakers, others have already realized that buying overpriced cheap material shoes is just not the way to go. The promotion of the shoes results into individuals desiring to get there hands on a pair and for this case it was by any means necessary. So far the media has done an excellent job promoting these shoes. Individuals still purchase them. Sneakerheads are being mind controlled, programed to worry about the next release date instead of worrying about bigger problems that our world is currently in countering. The  sneakerheads discourse is one of the many mind controlling scams, leading individuals into purchasing a cheap to manufacturer sneak at a high price while others like CEO's, investors, and other contributors except for the cheap labor manufacturers receive a good amount of profit. While consumers keep increase profits, this trend is no where near to an end. Now we can't change a culture that has been around for almost half a decade, but what we can do is raise awareness of how the sneakers are produced in sweatshops in third world countries and how each pair is made by a worker who's been through modern day slavery. And especially raise awareness on how the profits are distributed. Overall individuals, such as sneakerheads, shouldn't worry about the next release date or the upcoming Air Jordan shoe. Instead they should worry about current community turmoils or if not nation or worldwide. But mainly what they should focus on is bettering themselves positively as human beings.

Back to our "regular" writing discourse

Since the start of our English 221 class we have been taught to write in a discourse different from our academic writing that we were used to in our Freshmen Composition course. Proper English writing consists of certain paragraphs structures that support your main idea or thesis. This new discourse gave us more freedom to write in our own opinion without the need of proper English. It also allowed you to use slang words or even the use of another language if it made you feel more comfortable. While it sounded easy at first, it was hard for me to leave academic English because I was really accustomed to it. In fact now that we are returning to our regular academic writing style for paper three I can say I missed it a bit. However, that does not change the fact that it has been challenging to find credible primary and secondary sources and organizing my ideas into a structured essay. It was been a while since I have written an argumentative analytical paper.

Finding a primary source for my topic Guantanamo Bay was challenging at first because unlike a law this was more of an issue making it harder to find the actual original document or source that enabled the Guantanamo Bay military prison. It was also difficult to search for reliable sources that supported and opposed to my side. Though many Americans oppose closing Guantanamo Bay primarily because of fear after the 911 attacks, I support the closing of Guantanamo Bay.

This military prison violates human rights guaranteed by the constitution.
Detainees at Guantanamo Bay are held for indefinite without charges. Many of them have been released after years of imprisonment without even getting charged because they were denied a fair trial. They have been denied the right to a Habeas Corpus, a court order to a prison official, demanding “bring the body” or in other words to present proof of their crime. This can then permit a prisoner to be released if the court determines that the prison official is acting beyond their authority. Indefinite detention at Guantanamo Bay violates the Fifth Amendment right to due process, the Sixth Amendment right to speedy trial, the Eight Amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishment.

Extreme torture is used on a daily basis in Guantanamo Bay. Enhanced interrogation techniques include sleep deprivation, waterboarding, stressed positions, and severe beatings. These practices are all illegal and it violates the third Geneva Convention barring cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment.

I plan to sharpen my argumentative paper using all these facts that support my side.

White Expectations

White Expectations

If one person expresses himself or herself differently when writing an essay does that make the essay or them wrong?  After reading and discussing with the class SRTOL, I was opened to viewing both arguments sides. But I must say that regular “standard English” in schools is the right way to go. I respect the concept and the open ideas of allowing everyone to speak in their own discourse. Although that would not work due to the fact that professors are not indirect relation to those discourses.

The majority of people in America speak English that is why it’s so difficult to change the Standard English.  Many might like to argue that there is a majority of people that speak Spanglish in America. This is due to the fact that there is a large amount of Mexican/Latinos in America. Which leads me to say that in order to be successful in todays society one must learn how to speak and write as a white person would, because in a perfect world everyone would be able to speak in ones discourse and understand one another.  In reality you need to write correctly to communicate with one another.
In my opinion I feel that individuals that grew up only speaking English had an advantage over people like myself that had to learn English as a second language as well. If one thinks about it English dominants in todays society, that is why students need to learn perfect English, in order to be fairly equal among one another.

Everyone must think about the big picture in order for everyone to communicate in today’s country and run successful business one must understand how to read and write proper English. Although in a perfect world everyone would be able to talk in their own discourse and be able to understand one another.

Argument

Argument

When you have an argument you usually are on one side and based on the knowledge you have about the topic you stay on that side. The person with the stronger facts and more information about the topic wins the argument. There are different ways to get audience’s attention when writing essay on arguments. My all time favorite is defiantly a persuasive essay because of many reasons. The first reason is that in the persuasive essay there is always a hook that is supposed grasps the reader’s attention. And if you have a strong hook the rest of the essay should be simple.

Sometimes it can be hard to write a persuasive essay but one major factor I use is understanding who my target audience is. If you know who the target audience is then focus your writing on them and try to say or write in their discourse. The more of a connection you make with your audience the more they will be interested in your essay. Another factor is make sure you state a counter argument and elaborate on it. The counter argument gives the reader a different take on the situation but this is when you use it to your benefit. This is when you sort of put the other side to your argument on blast.

One thing I have noticed is that when writing these types of essays, you cannot be on both sides. Most people question why this is, but if you were on both sides then there really is not anything to argue over. Act as if your defending someone you love from going to prison or something like that. And make sure you stick to one side because it can confuse people if you’re for both sides. This is pretty much my understanding of a persuasive essay, hopefully it can be of some use to you all for paper 3.
