Never had I once paid attention to what
INVISIBLE NARRATIVE meant, but now I realize that most things I am exposed to
have an invisible narrative. It was at the beginning of the semester when I was
finally introduced to a few different invisible narratives and I was able to
point out that most of them are things we as humans either face or see in the
world today. In the Media today invisible narrative are shown constantly,
however we aren’t aware or pay attention to the invisible narratives unless
they are insulting to us or until we are told to pay close attention to catch
the true meaning. Media creates invisible narratives that are usually
stereotypes that are often seen as a joke and we use them in our daily lives
because they seem normal, but we don’t ultimately see the true meaning behind
them. We are not conscious about what we say or do because it becomes part of
the norm, but ultimately they are things being said or exposed that are hurtful
to others. We do not see that the hidden messages behind the invisible
narratives that can be true and often discouraging towards a race, gender or
class. I truly believe that most things we see in society have a hidden
message. I know for a fact after
understanding the definition of invisible narratives I acknowledge everything I
see twice to understand the true meaning of what’s in front of my eyes.
Reflecting on my first piece of writing in the
beginning of the semester, I wrote about my beliefs on how one is able to achieve
success. I decided to write about success because when I was in the 8th
grade I was always told that if I wanted to be as successful I had to follow
the steps of those individuals who are white. Why, because they are often the
ones who are successful. At one point, I remember a white substitute was staring at every the majority of Latin and view African American students in the class and said Mexicans
and Africans Americans have it a lot harder then the white man in this world. This made me
feel discourage and hopeless, he said, “Look at the number of presidents we
have had any of them Mexican?” I asked myself why are we looked down upon? I
asked myself are we less capable of being successful? Is he right? Once
internalizing his words I began to tell my self that I do not need to follow
the example of the white man to be successful. I do not need to praise a MAN in
his success. To me it is a constant battle, I believed in my capability as a Latin
female. I knew that my beliefs on
success were going to happen because there isn’t just on path to success and I
decided to create my success I understood as both a female and coming from a
Latin
background I would be seen as weak, but since that day I told myself that
I would be successful. I was not going to follow the typical stay home mom. I knew that my decision-making would be
essential to my success. We make decisions that affect us in achieving success,
but that doesn’t mean we stop and give up, but it clearly means we pick
ourselves up and grow. We need to think and be aware of how certain factors
play a role in our lives and how it can affect our decision-making. We create the path to our success and we are
held responsible to push ourselves in the right direction. It is the decisions
we make that determine how our end result is. We shouldn’t let other determine
our success, but prove not to them but to ourselves that we to are successful
human beings and are fighting for a successful future. For those who feel discouraged because they do
not follow the “ideal” path, (whatever that path is) shouldn’t feel less
successful, because ever human being is different! We are all creative and
intelligent in our own way. We make the call and determine how we want success
to look like for ourselves.
Very interesting invisible narratives you've pointed out! I love the motivation and inspiration you have to succeed. Keep it up!
