Immigration Reform

technontech.com by: Eduardo Verdugo
For many years, people seeking for a better life style have immigrated to the United States hoping to reach their own “American Dream”. However, little do these innocent people know how difficult it is to reach this long awaited dream. Why should individuals be prohibited from these opportunities? Although this may be a country of equality and opportunity, it is not always possible for everyone. Illegal immigrants have left their homeland to seek better opportunities for themselves and their families. Immigrants are being prevented from reaching the “American Dream” due to the immigration status barrier, which places them at the very bottom of society. It is essential for an amnesty to pass in order to provide equal opportunities to all immigrants.

In 2008, President Obama promised to pass an immigration reform to benefit millions, yet this promise has not been accounted for. Obama has not received the answers he wishes from the Republican Party, which has caused him to take action on his own. Since there are no agreements between the two parties, President Obama passed DACA, Differed Action for Childhood Arrivals. Although this protects youth immigrants from deportation who arrived here as children, it does not protect their parents nor the rest of their family. DACA is a good step, but not enough. We need a new policy that will fully protect children, parents, and grandparents from being deported.

Immigrants deserve to be legalized. Many may argue that immigrants take jobs away from real “Americans”, but this is not the case. Immigrants occupy backbreaking jobs with terrible working conditions. These hard working individuals pay taxes and in return get little help. Most immigrants don’t qualify for health care and other public services. It is ironic that immigrants get blamed for using too many public services such as food stamps, although in reality, White Americans are the ones who predominantly use this service. It is time to provide equal aid for immigrants and their families.

The reason for not having enough immigrants occupying professional careers is because they have little or no financial support from the government. It is obvious that under these circumstances students will chose not to continue their education. It is depressing that students nor their parents can afford to pay for tuition. We need better paying jobs and open minded employers. Immigrants should not be left behind because of the lack of a social security number. A number shouldn’t identify a person nor make one better than another. We must include everyone regardless of their immigration status. This will benefit the individual, society and economy.

In order to push the idea of an immigration reform, Congress must first return to office. Republicans should be a little flexible to not only help the economy by legalizing hard working immigrants, but they will also gain minority support for the upcoming elections. Immigrants don’t deserve to live in silence nor to be placed at the bottom of this imaginary pedestal. The deportation phenomenon must be stopped to prevent family separations. However, this will only be seen after immigrants practice direct action, forcing Congress to approve an amnesty.
